how long’s it been since you read any of beverly cleary’s stories about ramona? yeah, me too. until i pulled ramona, the pest off the shelf for our most recent read-aloud. we just finished it today. and i must say that it had my 2 older boys laughing out loud and that it absolutely blessed my little heart. yes, we tried junie b. jones the other day. and i understand it was meant to be a chapter book that they read by themselves, but i’d heard such great things about it that we tried it out. i was just disappointed. maybe if i followed her for a lot longer or didn’t have such high hopes. i don’t know. i liked her and the boys laughed a few times, but for my money i’d rather stick with ramona and her antics. especially since cleary’s books are lengthier. even the boys said upon finishing junie b., “that’s it? we’re through?” but this didn’t start out a junie b. bashing. that really wasn’t the point. the point was that we identified so much with ramona. if you have a 4-6 year old, go read these again. and read them to your younguns. ’cause i think you’ll see your k-1st grader in her. and you’ll realize kids are kids are kids. and that there’s nothing new under the sun. and your worries about how your little one behaves will melt away under all that recognition.
