I Sat Idly By

After discovering BigMan in my container of flour and removing the remaining good flour I just let him be.  As in, knowingly walked away while he sat right there on my counter and played contentedly with approximately 6 cups of flour.
And then I sat idly by while the others joined him in his “cookin’”.
And then I continued to sit there in my favorite spot on my couch while they offered to “clean up” the mess.  So TheOldest retrieved the seldom-used vacuum and got started.

Then I sat idly by while all four of my children stood in awe at the workings of a vacuum cleaner.
I even sat there laughing while my husband said, “They don’t know what one is!”
I then got up from my peaceful spot and commanded little people to pick up toys enough that I could wipe, sweep, and vacuum.

And then I sat myself back down.

Trust. On Several Levels

It’s funny that y’all mentioned trust in the last post.  I didn’t see it initially.  The thing I loved most about those pictures on first look is my husband’s face in the second pic.  Just look at that.  Could he be any happier?  Could I love him any more for it?
blw bigman splashdown
But when y’all said “trust” it got me to thinkin’.  This is the child and the daddy that had me heart-broken 2 years ago.  This is the baby that wouldn’t go to his daddy.  Ever.  If Matt picked him up he cried.  And cried.  And cried.  If Matt (or any other adult person besides me, for that matter) even looked at him he screamed.  Uncontrollably, until I swooped in and rescued him.  It was this way from day one.  The moment he came out.  And it continued this way for well over a year.  Just a few months ago if I attempted to leave him at home with his daddy for a brief outing to the store he wailed until I returned.  That’s my fault, some of you will say.  And you’re allowed to say that.  Just as you’re allowed to be wrong.  He is the fourth, remember?  And by now I’ve learned every one of these little boogers has their own personality.  From day one.  Coddle them, carry them, pick them up, abandon them, leave them, “train them” at 3 months, whatever, sure, you can have an effect.  However, you can have an effect on who they already are, not on a blank slate.  I didn’t create this child to be attached.  Thankfully, he was my fourth, and as I said as I was going through it, it was a season.  I stressed some on it, because who doesn’t want to see the daddy of their child cuddled up in a naptime with his newborn infant?  But, having seen the scale of the others, and seeing them grow over the years, I knew that they would turn into toddlers that would discover how great Daddy could be and slowly pull away from the comfort of my Mama’s hand into the fun filled Daddy one.  I’ve watched all 3 other children make the shift from “I ont Mama!” to “No, Mama!  Want Daddy!”.  All of them.  Without fail.  Began to choose their Daddy over their Mama.  And I rejoiced then, just as I am rejoicing now.  It’s his season.  And I love it.  Not one ounce of me is sad to see the shift.  Who could be, when looking at this picture?

So, Mamas out there who happen to have babies like this little guy who never seemed to “bond” with their Daddies, hang in there.  Trust.  Because one day it will happen.  They will shun your hand and turn to his.  And in that moment, all the guilt and worry you’ve had will wash away with joy.

We Have A Winner!

Congratulations Maury!  (I’m betting you choose a dress-a-doll since I promised forever ago to make you more.  So now you get one free!)
And it’s a good thing, I only had 2 more hints for y’all.
Those hints being:  It’s found in 1 Chronicles and a Petra song.

Kenaniah – pronounced Ken-uh-ni-ah (long i)  also spelled Chenaniah – but we’ll be using the “K” version.

Meaning: YAHWEH establishes
1 Chronicles 15:22 Kenaniah, Chief of the Levites, was in charge of the singing; he gave instruction singing because he was skillful.
1 Chronicles 15:27 Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen with all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Kenaniah the leader of the singing with the singers.
So, to catch you up.  David had just been made king and was bringing the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem to a tent David had prepared for it.  David appointed the Levites to carry the ark and appointed certain Levites to play certain instruments and sing to lead the ark into the city.  Kenaniah was the chief of the Levites and in charge of the singing.  A little bit of an honor.
My husband thought of the name.  He was a hard-core Petra fan back in the day (okay, okay, I really liked Petra too, I’m just not quite as knowledgeable a fan as my husband!).  He remembered their song “Kenaniah” and came home singing it.  For those of you with computer capabilities here is the YouTube version of it.
For those of you who are still on dial up (you poor unfortunate souls) here are the lyrics as well.
Words by Bob Hartman, John Lawry & Danny Klingen

Music by John Lawry & Danny Klingen
Kenaniah of the Levites appointed by the king
To teach the songs of Zion, to lead them as they sing
Your song is not forgotten, we hear it in our souls
Let it burn and burn within us
(And) Fan the sacred coals
[Chorus]
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, we will sing your ancient song
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, we will sing it loud and strong
Gathered for the battle, Kenaniah led the way
As the singers closely followed him they all began to pray
The musicians all assembled, Kenaniah gave the word
Through the raging battle zone the anthem could be heard
Sing unto Jehovah of his wonderous ways
Sing a song of triumph, sing a victory song
And in the cloud of witnesses Kenaniah sings along
[Chorus]
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, through the ages it will ring
Kenaniah, Kenaniah, to Jehovah we will sing
Thanks for playing, guys!  I’ve had a blast reading all your guesses and the funny stuff thrown in.  Soon I’ll post on the others’ real names, the meanings, how they came about being named, and why I don’t use them all the time online.  And then we’ll go back to calling them by their online nicknames and nicknaming this sweet Kenaniah for his online persona.  This was SO much fun!

Our Current Lapbooks

ThePrincess just finished “Are You My Mother” lapbook that we found at Homeschool Share.  This lapbook was based on the book of the same name and very simple, even needing to be a little more challenging for her, but it was a fun and easy one.

TheMiddlest is working on a dinosaur lapbook also from Homeschool Share.  For the boys, we’ll work a lot longer on theirs and consequently will be a bigger lapbook when it’s all over.  I print off all the material we will use, including the directions for my benefit.  I stick all of the unused material, some glue, a pair of scissors, a pencil and the components that they complete in a gallon ziplock.  When all the material is completed then I will put all of the pieces together in a lapbook for them.
Here are the outsides of the components we did in one day.  Cut out and folded.

And here are the insides of those same components filled out.

TheOldest is working on a camping lapbook from the same place.  I do the same as I described above, each child has their own ziplock and I put the lapbooks together when they are all finished.  Here all the components TheOldest has done in two days’ work.  I know it doesn’t look like a lot, but for a child that has struggled with fine motor skills this is pushing his limits.  Today we did just the campfire component.  He cut out each part, glued them in, and then copied the material that I wanted him to write onto each page.  There are still 2 more pages to the “campfire steps” component, but he was nearly in tears by the time he wrote all of this, so we stopped and we’ll do the rest another day, then staple the little pages together and he’ll have another component completed.

Star Wars Lapbook

I have a crazy question – my boys (7 & 6) are really wanting to do a Star Wars Lapbook.  (By the way, for those of you who have asked about how we do lapbooks – I have a post all ready for the presses over at The Heart of the Matter Online – I’ll let you know when it publishes)  They’ve loved Star Wars since their daddy introduced them to it when the oldest was 3!  We edit them with the fast forward button as we see fit and we’ve talked about every aspect of the good vs. bad.  We’ve talked about character traits and how even the smallest decisions we make can lead us to Christ or away.
They draw every scene and hum the theme.  They have sparring matches.  It has entered every part of our school and I’m begging the homeschool/Star Wars geek community to step forward and help with links, templates, and ideas.  I will pull it together and submit it here, if you don’t mind, when I hear from everybody.
I’ll probably update this and recycle this begging post so that maybe strangers out there who (like us) do searches for “Star Wars”  and “Star Wars Activities” will leave me a comment and direct me to great kid-related places.  We’ve already found a couple that we like, but I know there are more out there.  And I’m going to try to alter some of the information into lapbook components.
To kick this off (and inspire you!) I’ll leave you with a picture my 7 year old drew (did not trace) from a“follow directions to draw” Star Wars post.  So, please, please send me your links for great kids’ Star Wars sites and activities!

The Name Game - Installment 2

Here’s the latest quick rundown on your suggestions.
And I have to say here how we named the others.  We threw out suggestions and there were a lot of “eh..s” or “oh, no..s” or “maybe..s” and a final sense from both Matt and me “That’s It!”  We’ve never had to “give in” to each other.  I feel like each child has their name because they are supposed to.  I know that will be the same this time too.
I also feel like I should tell you – I just KNEW this child was going to be a girl.  I knew her name to be Mercy.  We’ve called this child this as much (and as seriously) as we’ve joked about it being Jedidiah.  So, when we found out it’s a boy I feel as though I didn’t get my Mercy.  Does that make sense?  Like when we decided to not find out the gender with our 3rd who ended up being our Princess – we had a boy name picked out and a girl name.  When ThePrincess was born we didn’t have our boy.  Though I was thrilled with our girl and would have it no other way, I felt as though there should have been a twin in there with that name.  (Amazingly, we got that boy child and named him that name with our fourth! – Enter BigMan!)  So, I LOVE that we’re having a boy, just kind of wish there was a girl twin in there too – you know, our Mercy.  Besides the fact that it leaves us with no boy name.  So, did you follow all that?!
Disclaimer: If you, your children, your husband, your best friend, or future children are named these and I dog them out, please forgive.  This is how I feel about this name for THIS child.  Who knows, with other children that may change.  Not trying to step on toes.  Just have fun!
On with the list…
Elijah – still on the short list of our collective, “mm.  yeah, like it.  doesn’t blow me over.”
Zachariah – no.  with no real reason, just a sense of, “mm.  no.”
Nathaniel – same as Zachariah.
Moses – I’m just weird enough, to kind of like it, but no striking, “yes!”
John the Baptist – sorry, Noah, that’s a nope.
Isaiah – I still like it, but no real word from Matt.
Isaac – nope.
Steven – too common.
Levi – nope.
Gabriel – knew a Gabriel (called him Gabe and Gabers) once.  I loved him.  Can’t be another in my mind.
Jehu – (pronounced like Jay Who) Yes!  We both really like this, but we’re kinda sittin’ on it.
Jonathan – nope.
Thomas – kinda.  but not sure about the doubting part.  just doesn’t strike me.
Nehemiah – Like the “N” factor and the “ah” factor, but the name as a whole, eh.
Judah (Jude) – It’s okay, know a sweet baby named this (hi! Jude!) Matt really likes it.  For me, eh.
Daniel – nope.
Ephraim – nope – reminds me of a medicine.
Benjamin – eh.
Caleb – nope.
Ezra – I still like this, but no real word from Matt on this one.
Gideon – Matt and I both kind of like this.  On the short list, but no “Wowser!”
Israel – Love, Love, LOVE Israel.  It would be my pick.  But Matt nixes it due to the increasing craziness in the world.  As he says, “I don’t know about a person named Israel in the year 2050.”  I know, but I really (hear the whining?) really like it.  But as I’ve just said, if we don’t both get blown over, then we don’t go with it.
And while searching the concordance we’ve laughed through names like Nimrod, Elijah Gad and call him E.Gad!, Gomer and more.
And back to Jedidiah – still not wild about it.  Increasing feeling that we’ll go with it, just because we’ve used it so much and it has become a household joke.  And then I had to go and look it up in our big mega concordance and I realized for the first time that Jedidiah is the name God gave to Solomon when he was born.  Ugh.  That almost made me name him that right then and there.  That’s an awfully good namesake.  And besides, who doesn’t want a Jedi in their house?
We’ve also looked up Hebrew, Greek, and Latin translations for words like Mercy, Faith, Fifth (child), Fourth (boy), Boy and other such things with nothing jumping out at us.
So, more?  Just because I shot some down, doesn’t mean you can’t keep bringin’ ‘em!

Showing Off

While going through some older pics (read: sick on the couch months) I found these pictures I had taken of some of the older kids’ accomplishments.
table-building
TheOldest built a table on his own awhile back – with scraps from all the loft and bed-building.  My future engineer.
girl-schoolwork
I do not advocate starting kids early with school work.  Better late than early (I stole that, I think from Brenda, right?!).  But ThePrincess has done all of this on her own.  Unbelievable.  I’m really glad she wasn’t my first – I’d have had really unrealistic expectations of the boys.  She found this coloring/activity book and did this completely on her own – just before turning 4.  Crazy.
verse
When studying a Bible story the other day, I had the kiddos draw a picture to go along with what we learned.  This is TheMiddlest’s version of Moses taking off his shoes by the burning bush and God’s promise to him (and us).
